I was looking at the questions in this section and was wondering what the real difference is between the two? I have seen kaftans that are casual in the stores here in the US but now that I have seen pictures of the dressy ones I cannot tell the difference between them and takshitas.

When do you wear these dressy things? Don't just tell me on big occasions. What are considered big occaisions in Morocco? A baby's birth, a new home party? College Graduation?
Tnx

This is purely hypothetical and should be considered without concern of modesty or anything like that. I am just curious if you would be able to go to an American wedding reception wearing a takshita. On the one hand you could look really out of place next to ppl in their little black dresses but on the other hand...many takshitas are SO "luxe" and look like something a princess out of history would wear...you could be looking better than the bride.

What would you think if you went to an American wedding reception and saw somebody in a takshita?

BTW, I am not going to a wedding reception or anything, this is NOT about me - the thought just crossed my mind as I saw a few photos recently of some takshitas that could maybe pass for a wedding reception here.

When I was there we were going to go after our carriage ride but everywhere we went on the way people kept telling us it was temporarirly closed so they could empty out the basin. I didn't believe it - I thought they were all joking with us. But we never went to find out because we didn't want to waste the time if it was closed. Do they actually do this?

As Sarah mentioned in another question, I too have issues with pulling on the decoration when the djellaba is wet so that it doesn't "shrink" in. Do you think they have ever tried to wash them before sewing them on so that this problem doesn't happen?

I hate that look. If you want to make yourself look ugly then that's the way to go imho.

They are the shorter djellabas that come with matching pants that you can wear or you can wear them with jeans etc.

I have a few and there are times when they come in handy like if I am going walking on rough terrain - where I would normally find a regular djellaba too constricting.

I do but I only have a few and I do wear them at home but not exclusively. There was a time when I only wore caftans but I ended up gaining a few pounds without realizing it because I wasn't ever wearing any jeans or anything to notice LOL.

This is NOT a contest, I am just curious. I have....let's see....about 10 actually Moroccan Djellabas, some I got from my sil or as gifts etc. I have some "Djellaba Moderne" and then I have some things that are fashioned after Moroccan djellabas and some Abayas or other things all together...

I have no plan except to travel in the warm Morrocan winter sunshine through the Northern Sahara and visit some small desert towns, discuss the meaning of life with other travellers and locals and avoid returning to reality till the money runs out.
Leaving Dublin on January 5th, the airfare is 80 Euros.

Isn't this quite hypocritical? I mean moroccan men can have sex before marriage and are even encouraged to do it but women are often shamed and discouraged sometimes even killed for doing it? Why the huge double standard?

I just need to know what clothes an average boy in Morocco would wear. I'm doing a project and require the appropriate Moroccan clothes. I also need to know a few places where I could get them.

Traveling to Marrakech in December..VERY EXCITED...my first trip to Africa. What are the top sites? Also, we plan on taking a train to Agadir or Casablanca....which would be more fullfilling for a culture experience? Thanks!
