I would like to do a cross stitch sampler for my boyfriend to take home for his family in Morocco

Even better would be to stitch in arabic salaamu alaikoum....I did one and it turned out really nice.

Just straight stitch it.

I've never seen one. I would just make something that doesn't depict any animals or ppl to be on the safe side. Maybe something with geometric patterns. I'll think some more and see if I can come up with anything else.

You could write Bismelah as well, especially if it was to be put near the door.
