hmmm, if you're travelling to and fro on train, is it generally cheaper to buy a return ticket or two single tickets, one each way?

does anyone know the easiest way to get from new york to new jersey by train? i'd take penn station out of new york, and i need to get to south jersey. (cherry hill area).
