...English is a Germanic language, is it not? Has English adapted so much from the Romance languages, and who knows what else, that it has become a "bastard" language?

Similarly, is it easier for native Romantic speakers to learn another Romance language or English?

I find a broad Scottish accent very nice on men, a Southern US or NYC accent sexy on girls, an Italian accent charming, and a Cockney or Middle-English accent loathsome. What are your favourite or least favourite accents in English, and why?

I'm Brazilian from Rio and have been living in the U.S for 7yrs. My English throughtout the years has improved a lot but people can still detect an Accent whenever I open my mouth. I would like to loose my Accent and sound and speak more like an American. Do you have any tips or info on how do I do that?

To make a long story short, I am half Chinese and I'm trying to learn Chinese from my mother...I'm fairly young so I'm sure that will help, but most people say it's harder to learn a second language once past the age of 12. Is this true? Basic words I'm learning, but Chinese is a very complicated language, and I'm not even THINKING about trying to read or write it...anyone have tips on how to remember words/pronunciations easier? :D a little help from the teachers on here would be much appreciated.

E.G: "The point is: different are the adults, not the children..." [I've not read this, I just made it up now].

Another exemple: "My best friend he is" [instead of "he is my..."].

Can we do that? Bring me some other exemples, please, in the case of it being possible. Ok? Thanks in antecipation.

I am really looking for a college with a great Japanese program. I have three in mind, but I'd rather not reveal them. If anyone says the three I am thinking of, then it will only help me in knowing that I made good choices. It must be a major-it cannot be just classes/courses. And I am referring to American colleges. I would like to earn my major in America, and not Japan. I am also looking for colleges with good study abroad programs to Japan. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Please also explain why so I have some credibility behind your answer. If you are currently majoring in Japanese in some college, and can explain to me about their program, that would also really help. Thanks!

I swear that somewhere either Strunk and White or Modern English Usage taught me in college that only one of the following should be used and yet I see both in print. Which is right? Are both right? toward vs. towards I would have thought toward was the right one stemming possibly from to ward as in to ward off evil.....Thanks!

Should I say "girl friend"? or "friend girl"?

I've an American female friend (but not a woman yet but a girl) which I not my girfriend. So, I'd like to know a way to refer to her. I've asked about it to herself but I ain't satisfied with her answer.

Ok?

I took 5 years of French in high school but since I've been chatting a lot in Italian lately, I'm losing my French. I learned from talking to people in Italian that chatting in the language is a great way to get better at it. Please let me know! Thanks! :)
