I know Christmas is about Jesus's birth, but why did they invent Santa Claus? Why do we give each other presents and put up Christmas trees?I just don't know.Did the tradition of celebrating Jesus's birth get boring or somthing? Why and when did these other Christmas traditions come in?

Can I just clear this one up, because my parents were a bit ambiguous about the whole thing - there isn't a jolly fat man who delivers gifts to all the children of the world on Christmas eve is there? It defies science, but I want to be sure.

I'm wondering how many people do traditions without knowing why they do them. Decorating trees was a pagan tradition, that when alot of the pagans became Christian they still keep alot of their traditions and tied it along with their new found religion. Example....Easter eggs, and bunnies...What does that have to do with Jesus's resurrection? This also is originated through the Pagan practise of worshiping the God of Fertility "Ester", which is why bunnies and eggs symbolizes this.

In the Bible Jeremiah 10:2-4: "Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not." (KJV).

I want my daughter to understand and appreciate the true meaning of Christmas - celebrating the birth of Jesus. I am not trying to totally keep her from having anything... Santa is bringing her 4 gifts, I got her 2, and I am fine with everyone else giving her 1 thing. But no more than one thing unless it's like clothes or something she needs. I have been looking around that some of the other kids around here... I don't hear any mention of Jesus - just how many presents they want. It's really upsetting to me.

My daughter, on the other hand, wanted to get a gift for Baby Jesus and has asked for very few things considering her age. She has thought of small gifts for most of the people we know too. I do not want her to get spoiled and loose the meaning of Christmas. I never asked for much either, and I didn't get much because my family was poor. But no one is respecting my wishes of 1 present now that they have good jobs.

Am I wrong for not wanting my kid to be showered in gifts?
