I've worked in several retail stores over the years...and I ask the same question all the time.
I think people are just lazy...though some believe its sales...most places already have items on sale at the begining of the month to capitalize on X-mas, and most stores don't do any big mark downs till after X-mas. So I stand by my laziness theory...
From my experience the BIGGER sales come after X-mas. Like Nordstrom (a place I used to work) has their Men's half yearly sale after X-mas. I'm currently working at Armani Exchange for the holidays/seasonal help, and they are having their big sale after X-mas as well. Alot more other stores have big sales after X-mas and the day after X-mas is ACTUALLY more busier and more money is made; than the day after Thanksgiving.
So I think its just laziness and procrastination.

I asked a friend who does this why and he said because he hates Christmas and the commercialism surrounding it. My answer to that would be to tell your family and friends that you do not wish to exchange gifts unless for children and then focus on the part of Christmas that you do enjoy. Face it, we are nation consumed with consumerism. Also, there are people who absolutely hate shopping (unless for themselves, of course, who then can be considered selfish) and so they put it off to the last minute and resent it all the way, which just negates the whole purpose of giving. IMO, if you can't give with a happy heart, then don't do it and don't expect people to give to you either!! In my family we all agreed months ago not to exchange for the adults (because we don't need anything and prefer to shop for ourselves) except for cookies and bakery and we set a limit for the kids. I hate crowds and last minute shopping so I have my shopping done for the kids by the end of October and then you have time to make your list, watch the sales and get really good deals. There is no need to wait for the last day before Christmas for good sales. I got everything I bought cheaper than I have seen it lately and I didn't have to run all over trying to find the hot items. I then can spend December enjoying holiday events and baking and don't have to worry about running around in crowded malls. Its all a matter of planning. If your budget can't stand the strain around Christmas, then you can open a Christmas account at the bank and deposit a small amount each month, then when December comes around, you have the money to spend. Most people I see charge everything anyway, so money can't be the reason people wait. I personally think its procrastination, selfishness and the not wanting to do it. Everyone knows when Christmas is, so if you are extremely busy person, then you need to plan ahead to have the time to do it. Start earlier in September or October if you have to and buy a few items each week or month. People complain about the stress and pressure of it all and not having time to do everything, but that is what they do to themselves.
Once again, if you don't like buying for people, then just say you don't want to exchange and then don't expect anything back.

usually I do not wait until the last minute. Sometimes people have circumstances that prevent them from going shopping. I have had 3 close friends die within 6 weeks and it is difficult to be in the Christmas spirit. Also, besides buying my kids presents, I have to cook on Christmas eve, Christmas brunch and then something for a potluck Christmas that afternoon. Maybe others are like me and overwhelmed!

because when they plan something and they start to prepare meals or gather gifts to give they realize that they have forgotten something so that is why most of the people wait until the last minute to finish their shopping, with others they don't really feel the christmas spirit unless they are rushing around like a chicken with it's head cut off trying to find the right gift for the right person at the last minute because it adds to the excitement of christmas to them.

I can only speak for myself, but on Christmas Eve my dad and I go to the mall and go shopping. We've done it every year for over 10 years now and it's a blast! Other than our shopping tradition, I wouldn't wait to buy stuff though, and would have mine done in August!

ah the question of the ages...
For some it's hard to make it a priority until it is absolutely necessary, like most things in our rat race lives..
For me, I wanted to save up the money for gifts and save as much as possible and if I had saved for all of january and gotten my gifts after 1 month of saving for the next december, I'd have $20. It take a year of preparation as I don't have massive resources to draw from. I couldn't get gifts until the last minute if I wanted to do the shop I wanted for my family, because I wanted to give all I possibly could to them.

some are for better bargains; some for when the money comes in ; some b/c of the time; some feel Christmas by getting out there last minute; some forgot someone or thought of something else that they would like to get

Procrastination is a habit. I know that's the reason why I waited until today... And that's the reason why I wait until the night before to finish an essay for school. It's a HORRIBLE habit that i'm slowly trying to correct :(

Because we are men. We hate to shop. There is other things we would much rather be doing than going to the mall and searching for something for hours. Oh did I mention we are men?
