Traditionally, Martin Luther.
The city of Riga, Latvia, claims to be home of the first holiday tree; an octagonal plaque in the town square reads "The First New Year's Tree in Riga in 1510", in eight languages. Around this same time period, and subject to much debate as to whether the event occurred before the Riga holiday tree, Martin Luther is said to have decorated a small tree in house to symbolize the way the stars shined at night.

The first known electrically illuminated Christmas tree was the creation of Edward H. Johnson, an associate of inventor Thomas Edison. While he was vice president of the Edison Electric Light Company, a predecessor of today's Con Edison electric utility, he had Christmas tree light bulbs especially made for him.

whilst the Christian church became attempting to extinguish the prevailing religions in Europe and located they could no longer they tried to take them over. maximum each and every thing that has to do with Christmas comes from pre-christian paganism. The church basically positioned the 'Jesus became born now' tale right into a the wintry climate solstice time slot and was hoping that it may seize on and take over the classic celebrations. there is not any information that Jesus became born on Dec. 25 or maybe in the wintry climate.

I read somewhere that Luther got the idea when he saw a tree against a starry winter night sky...whether that is true or not, I have no idea.
Candles on a real tree...now there's a recipe for disaster!
