Traditionally, throughout history, southern Europeans, which includes Spaniards, Greeks, Italians, etc., were several inches shorter than northern Europeans. Roman accounts describe the Germanic barbarians and the Celts as being "giants". Skeletal evidence shows that the average Roman soldier was 5'4, while the average northern warrior was 5'10. Even more recently, Italians and Spaniards were always thought to be short. But, official stats say that average male height in countries like Spain and Italy is 5'9-5'10, or, approximately 177 centimeters. That would mean that they are nearly as tall as northern Europeans, and just as tall as North American men. For those of you who live in Southern Europe, or who have travelled to Italy and Spain/Portugal, how tall would you say the average man was? Do the stats match realities, or are most people still very short in these countries? I would really love to know.
