It depends on the country and the culture--and maybe the religion. If you don't believe in god and let anyone know that, you will not be able to get anywhere in a Muslim country. That's 1/3rd of humanity. If you do not pay extensive bribes to anyone and everyone involved, or do not have any local partners, you can forget about India and China; that's about half of humanity. And a year is certainly not enough time to make contacts, learn the culture, and maybe even learn the language--more like a year or two for a Spanish-speaking country, and five to ten years for any Asian language.
