Big Business has been using tariffs from even before the Civil War to protect themselves from global competition. They probably don't work today b/c of globalization but why hasn't anyone thought of using tariffs to protect the little guy? The apple from your neighborhood farm is probably more expensive than the one from Chile. Only the big companies can afford to import stuff and produce stuff in bulk. Local fruits/veggies are better because they're fresher and they take less greenhouse gas(carbon dioxide) to move around than imports.

To be more clear, i'm interested in knowing how the US developed into becoming one of the economically strongest countries in the world. Pls. note that i want to know how the rural regions of America's past developed into becoming cities and towns in the context of applying this knowledge to finding ideas abt. how other countries can use this learning to develop their rural, semi-rural areas. How does a country improve its infrastructure, distribution mechanisms and further real economic improvement in the rural citizenry? I know that the first step is the roadways & travel/distribution pathways , the general infrastructure like raw material, power and water reqd. for industrial development, etc - but what i'm really looking for is why other countries which also have some of these attributes have not been able to develop as well as most parts of the United States... for example, Australia or India?

If so, where would you like to see yourself in that idealized world? Is there a better alternative to our westernized work model? Yeah, in other words, I hate my job, too.

I'm 21 and will be 22 on august 16th and have had epilepsy since around 5 and all my life I've dreamed of finding a good paying job, owning a home, and if I'm lucky enough while in the process of complete those tasks meet a nice girl who will have me and go out with me and maybe even one day get married. And if at that point in my life I feel like I'm ready emotionally and financially to take on that responsibility possibly even kids. Is it too late for a 22 year old high school graduate person with epilepsy with no job little money and no college experience to LEGALLY do those things? And if not how?

There is currently a problem with the Phillips curve which graphs inflation versus unemployment. Currently inflation and unemployment are both at historically low levels (according to official statistics). These facts are at odds with the theory, and I wonder if it is "that we have never had it so good" or in fact that we are in a period where there is no truth behind official statistics?

I mean, a lot of the time people say 'oh, I don't want my tax money to go towards this cause, or that cause', but could you get a workable system whereby people could say what they wanted their money to go on? For example, if I didn't want any of my income tax to find it's way to the military budget, I'd be able to tick a box barring that from happening, and so on and so forth... if I didn't care where my money went, I'd just leave it open... What might be the consequences if everyone could do that?
