Every economy needs to have a standard for trade - something that both parties need to further their own interests. It just so happens that as economies have developed, the majority have, in one way or another, set paper bills and metal coins as the standard for trade. Today, everywhere it's the same - money is recognized by everyone, so you need it to get what you want. It's a materialistic society to be sure, but it's the best way to judge how many apples are worth how many oranges.

Sure would be nice if you could get anything you needed or wanted without money. But then that you allow you to demand that someone else serve your needs for free wouldn't it. The short answer is because we are not a nation of slaves.

I like the way Walter Williams puts it. Lets say we set up an economic system based on service to your fellow man. You could go to the grocery store and demand food. The store keeper would say, what have you done to serve your fellow man. You reply I mowed my neighbors lawn. He then says what proof of this service to your fellow man do you have, you say here's $25. OK says the shop keeper you can have $25 worth of food.

Money is how we measure our service to our fellow man. What's wrong with that. A system of free enterprize (captialism?) is based on service to your fellow man you only get paid for providing something someone else wants. (Unless your a government leech)

i don't want to be consumed with money.. but you need it for something every day. maybe if everything was free. bills, rent, gas, food, going to the Dr's.clothes,toys. if all that
was free I'd probably stop being consumed with it. you must be a kid still in school. no one who has a family to take care of would ask something like this..
