How can I tell apart a geometric series from an alternating? Example: ∑ ((-6)^n-1)/(5^n-1), where n =1 and goes to infinity.

∑((-1)^n-1)/(n^6), where n=1 and goes to infinity.

Which is which? Should I just try to identify a and r, and if I get them, then is a geomtric? In other words, if I find the ratio, that proves the series to be geometric?

Rewrite each equation in the form y= mx + b. Then write an equation for a line parallel to the first and passing through the given point.

1) 6y = 3x - 12; (2,-4)
2) 1/2y = 3x; (-2,-9)
3) 5y = 4x + 5; (-5,-4)
4) 10y = -20x -20; (1,-3)
5) 3x = 3y - 12; (-5,-11)

e^x = 4 - 2x
*note: the stuff inside [brackets] indicates "sub" for example: x[n+1] --> x(sub)n+1

I got as far as x[n+1] = x[n] - ( ln(4-2x) / ((-2 / (4-2x[n])) - 1 )

I'm not even sure if that's correct either. I've been using x[1] = 1 as the starting point and after calculating up to around x[6] or so, I always end up with 1.499999 or 1.500000, which are both wrong answers.

Can anyone tell me where I'm messing up?

The pressure of the air in the Earth's atmosphere decreases exponentially with altitude above the surface of the earth. The pressure at the Earth's surface (sea level) is about 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi) and the pressure at 2,000 feet above sea level is approximately 13.5 psi.

Write an equation that expresses pressure in terms of the altitude. (Use information given to find "r" first)

Thanks!!!

I don't remember how to do these y=mx+b problems. I got it wrong on my test .

The graph of 5y - 4x = 36 passes through which of the following points? The answer choices are a- (0,-9), b- (4,-4) or d- (-9,0). I took off c- (-4,4) because that's not the right answer.

How do you solve it?

The user "Siddhartha Basu" posted four consecutive questions and in all of them gave the best answer to "Goutam", even though Goutam was never first with the correct answer, and often gave fewer details than other answerers. For example, in this case, Goutam just put one number:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Am6dIA3II1E.mx_E02pyVpXty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071026213944AAb3aRt&show=7#profile-info-I1MBt7myaa

In this case he copied my answer verbatim:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aox5xofvyvuDHQUpLVd.qkTty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071026213856AA0g5gM&show=7#profile-info-I1MBt7myaa

This also happened in two other cases (which you can find by looking at either "Siddhartha Basu" or "Goutam"'s profiles.

Has this happened to others? What is the proper way to address this?

I do not know if it should, but this kind of thing really bugs me, and makes me much less inclined to take my time to type out explanations to questions.

Thanks for your advice!

Describe the concavity of the graph and find the points of inflection (if any).

1) f(x) = x^3 - 3x + 2

2) f(x) = x^3 (1-x)

Do NOT use a graping calculator, show where the concavities are (and inflection points if there are any). Show your work. Thanks! :)
