My first guess is insecurity, but the fear and threat of knowledge must be a part of it too.

Maybe they are just agumentative?

Don't they know that this is a room for SCIENCE, based on evidence and data. Nothing in here should have anything to do with faith. Of course, faith is all they have to go on.
