thats a pretty huge question.

here is the general jist.

a seed or plant contains dna that it received from the previous generation. the dna codes for genes that are expressed and carry out a variety of functions. these include things like gathering materials from the environment, to using them for structure or energy, to providing for defense. as the plant grows, it continues to gather energy and materials from its environment, with the dna being the "hard drive" containing instructions on what to do.

In order for a plant to grow and change it needs a building permit from Mother Nature.

They get their nutrients through their roots from the soil, the sunlight also helps with photosynthesis. And of course, don't forget the water. =)
