I was thinking that maybe there would be a way to insert/combine the mastodon's DNA with an elephant's or something (since we can't manufacture a mastodon embryo, right?). I'm assuming the mastodons were relatives of the elephant.

Could we also do this to "bring back" other relatively recently extict animals like the Dodo or Tasmanian Tiger?

If water is good for you then how come humans aren't gentically/biologically/whatever programmed to enjoy drinking it, and enjoy its taste? I know water is tasteless but why doesnt the body give a signal when drinking water to encourage you to do so, e.g. endorphin/hormone release? I myself hate the taste of water but only drink it because I have to.

.... of genetic diversity? I have read a lot of Qs/As on evolution and natural selection, and there seems to be a theme developing. Where are so many people getting this idea that natural selection is purely deleterious (traits can only be lost), and that evolution serves to 'simplify' organisms? Are they being taught this at school, or what?
