The ultimate source of energy on the planet is the sun.
Plants trap sunlight and produce food (by photosynthesis).
Herbivores eat the plants; carnivores eat the herbivores;
All of them eventually die and their bodies are converted by
bacteria to a form that can be used by herbivores, and the cycle repeats.

Important cycles : The nitrogen cycle (Recycles proteins).
Carried on by bacteria 1. bacteria of decay (dead things
converted to ammonia)2.nitrifying bacteria (ammonia to
nitrates)3.nitrogen- fixing bacteria (In the roots of legumes
like peas ;( free nitrogen to nitrates )4. denitrifying bacteria
(nitrates to free N)

Ecosystems have four components that are linked by the flow of energy. The first component is made up of primary producers- organisms called autotrophs that use solar or chemical energy to make their own food, plants for example. The second component is made up of consumers. Consumers eat other organisms. A herbivore (something like a sheep for example) eats plants, so now the solar energy captured by the plant, is converted to energy for the sheep. A carnivore (a consumer that eats animals, for example, a wolf) eats the sheep, and the energy is transferred again.
The third component in energy flow in an ecosystem is made up of the decomposers, organisms that get energy from feeding on the dead remains or waste products of other organisms (the wolf dies, and mold and bacteria receive the energy stored in its body). An example here is fungi.
The final element of energy flow is the non-living (abiotic) part, for example, the external energy source, the sun.

Hope that isn't too long-winded.
