A better question might be why do human males grow beards.
Different species grow different amounts of hair. Male African lions grow a huge mane. American male mountain lions do not.
Sometimes this has to do with female preference when seeking a mate. Maybe at some point human females (or their ancestors) decided beards were attrative and chose to mate as often as possible with bearded males, thus passing that trait on to their offspring.

Other simian varieties like the baboon have maines and things though. Its all about survival of the fittest and the monkeys with beards were prob phased out - unless they secretly shave!
