Observation shows that the universe is expanding, or that space is expanding. The Big Bang theory has been confirmed.

What I want to know is couldn't the same observational results be gotten if space wasn't expanding, but rather objects within space like galaxies, were shrinking?

They would appear to ba oving away, and there would also be red shift, right?

I guess that astrophysicits know why my contention is wrong, but I don't. Any help therefore appreciated, and I don't mind *a few* long words.

Hi, I think I'd like to become an astronomer, I live in the UK so no American collages or anything please. Do you have to get a Ph.D? Also, is there anything I can do now, whilst in high school to increase the chance of becoming one?
Thanks for any answers.

This is something that just occured to me recently but since the Earth is at just the right distance from the sun (93 million miles) and had the right conditions for life developing (being neither too hot or cold like the other planets) why couldn't the same have happened on the Moon?

The Moon is approximately 240,000 miles from the Earth. That little closer distance to the Sun couldn't have made that much of a difference. There must be some other reason as to why an atmosphere and other conditions needing life to evolve did not occur on the Moon.

...and if so, and we stretched them end-to-end, is there any way to define how long the string of them would be?

Just a bit of numeric, theoretical-physics-based whimsy. :-)

Hi everyone,
Since a long time the question 'What is light' is questioning me...

We all seem to know what it is. It's something that lets us see and something that warms us up... But when I ask for a definition noone can answer me...

You cannot grab light, nor really 'see' it.
Can someone help me with my everlasting question...

What would be the outcome to our solar system after a collision with the Andromeda galaxy? I know that our galaxy would be altered, but would the shock wave from such a colossal impact wipe out life as we know it throughout our galaxy?

I have searched on net and found that the Nasa who claims that they have succeeded in touching the moon is not genuine. Please share your knowledge about it.

Considering stars of millions of light years away, meaning that when we look up and see the stars, we are actually looking at what the stars looked like millions of years ago, how do we know that there are still stars up there.

I often sit and poner whether or not the Lunar landings actually occured. I am not one of those people who watch those TV shows and immediately think HOAX! But it's hard to believe that NASA would send man to a new front with hardly any experiments to ensure there safety.. I don't know much about the tests and experiments NASA did prior to these missions but to think of the safety issues involved with sending a man to the moon, and the likely hood for survival seems pretty low. How did NASA know that the spacesuits the astronauts wore were going to keep the astronauts warm on the moon. I truly believe man has landed on the moon.. I would just like to know some of the preperations NASA took for such an astronaumical safety risk.

The way I understand Spacetime is that it is altered from gravitational pull from other masses.. Wouldn't that mean we are living in a somewhat slower "timespan" is the word I'll use then the Spacetime that isn't being affected by gravitational pull.. and if so.. How big of a distortion is it?
