How does knowing the period of variability of a Cepheid Variable star allow us to determine its absolute magnitude?

Also

How could one use the apparanet magnitude of a star to correctly determine the Period-Luminosity relation?

I have been struggling with this....please help!

In the South East of England, there is a very bright light in the sky at night at the moment. I am not sure what way it is facing, but I don't think it is the North Star. It is stationary and is there night after night and is quite big to the naked eye, considering the size of nearby stars.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Emma

Your task is to find out about the 3 ways a star can end (do not spend time researching supernovae)

you must the produce resources (diagrams, models, summaries of important points, worksheets etc) which will help you to teach others in your group about stellar death.

You will need to include explanations of the following ideas and terms
- white dwarf
- neutron star
- black hole
- what these different objects will become/do

you will need to use ideas about energy and force in your explanations.

I looks at this sheet and i think i know a bit but im not sure on any of it, anything useful like links to website explanations of answers would be lovely and thank you in advance for your help.

I hear about a global EYE-SPY that is used on one (or many) of the sattelites that orbit our planet. - (Maybe it is in use by NASA or some "International survelience org.")
I hope to get a "Bird's-eye view" of many places around our globe - ("s-h-h-h-h-h!" without having to travel there) and my own back yard (just because I can.) :-')
What is that website address? and I hope it is free!
Thanks.
P.S. I already have my GPS coordinants to my yard.

I know on light gathering of course, the refelctor wins.

but what benifits does a Maksutov-Cassegrain have over a basic reflector, other then price. is there that much of a diffrence between them in planet views and messier objects. and so on? If you had a choice between a 4.5 reflector with autostar 494. and or a Maksutov-Cassegrain 90mm 3.5 with a autostar 497. both have what is said 325x max power... on that what one would have the better VIEW?

I have heard that if you had two twins, seperated them and put one on mars for 5 years and one on earth for 5 years then brought them together one would be obviously older than the other, is this true? If it is true what about different altitudes, for example if one twin stayed on top of everest and the other at sea level for 5 years would they age differently
