Charon (the largest moon of Pluto) is on the board to be classified as a planet, but how can this be? A planet must:

1) Orbit around the sun
2) Have a sufficient gravitational density to maintain a spherical shape

By definition, a moon orbits its planet, not the sun. Is Charon different?

The Earth Venus & Mars are sometines known as the three sisters. I prefer the analogy as Goldilocks and the three Bears. Best answer gets the 10 pts. You're on the clock.

As we sweep around the sun, are we moving in a straight line as a single object, or, since the Earth and Moon are the closest in size of any 2 planet system, are we like a couple of ballroom dancers moving as one unit around a central locus as we sweep across the dance floor? I hope I used locus correctly.

Under new guidelines for the indentification of planets there will now be 12 recognised planets instead of the current 9. With the new system, if a planitary body has enough gravity to pull itself into a sperical shape then it is a planet. The new proposal, which will soon be voted upon by a worldwide body of astronomers, puts planets into three groups:

The Classical Planets(8): Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

The plutons (small icy planets on the outer fringers of the solar system, of which there are currently 3, but this number may rise as new planets are discovered and identified, at the moment there are around a dozen other planets under investigation): The twin planets of Pluto & Charon (formerly Pluto's moon) and 2003 UB313 (now the furthest planet from the sun, it is bigger than pluto)

Ceres: Under the new system this former asteroid between Mars and Jupiter is now a planet.

I just saw on the news that under new guidlines for the classification of planets there are now 12 planets in our solar system, rather that the commonly thought of 9. And this number is set to grow as other large, recently discovered, rocks on the fringes of the solar system are studied more. This new classifiaction system has greatly interested me, and I will be very pleased if someone can give me information about the system and the newly identified planets.

The new definition of a planet has demoted Pluto to a lower status. However, it has promoted some previous non-planets into planetary status. Is this fair on Pluto who previously had full planetary status?
