The e-mail that went around the Internet was a hoax. Mars was actually closest to Earth on August 28, 2003. Just do a search for the "Mars hoax." Here are some sites:

You probably got late information....
The Earth and Mars got the closest they will be a few years ago. It was quite spectacular showing of mars that year. Shame you missed it.
And even if it was true you wouldn't be able to see it. Right now Mars rises at about 8:00 AM. So the sun blocks it out.

This is false, an urban legend as they put it. This was suppose to happen Aug 2003 and now it seems it has gotten back into circulation again. This could be true however. Some web site say it is, others say no.

it wont this month or this year.
mars was closest to earth last year, i cant remeber what the exact date is. and from what i remember, it will be closer to earth after 2oo years.
