A large number, N, of people are subjected to a blood test where the blood samples of k (a factor of N) persons are pooled and analysed together. If the test is negative, this one test suffices for the k individuals. If the test is positive, each of the k persons must be tested seperately. The test responses for the N people are independent and the probability (1-p) for a test to be positive is the same for all people. What is the probability that the test for a pooled sample of k people will be positive?
