Let x=1 and x=y

x=y
xy=y^2 multiply both sides by y
xy-x^2=y^2-x^2 subtract x^2 from both sides
x(y-x)=(x+y)(y-x) factor
x=x+y divide both sides by (y-x)
1=1+1 since x=1 and x=y
1=2
