Steel portal frames consist of rafters and columns. What is the design principle? For what do we design these different members? Is it for tension? For shear? For uplift? Or anything else?

In my chem lab, we had a solution of 1 drop bleach (5.25% NaOCl) and 1 drop 0.1M HCl. After it reacted for a bit, we added 1 drop of NH3. The question is "explain how this terminates the reaction using words and chemical equations." I think I get the word part (wouldn't the NH3 just neutralize the HCl, and then the NH3 doesn't react with the NaOCl?) but what about the equations?

Hi,

I was watching the right stuff this weekend, and the pilot of one of those old school mercury orbiters said that his velocity was 57,000 kph. I wondered how one could measure the velocity of the craft from inside. It couldn't be air pressure like with a plane, or with radar because it's moving too quickly. I was very confused about this. Ideas?

Thanks,
Matt

it is currently impossible to achieve manned supersonic or even sub sonic travel under water due to the mass of water right? And the pressures that depth can create,it limits how fast we can go... we could currently go faster with the subs we have by adding horse power.even if we could get enough power into a submersible to go supersonic it would just rip apart like hitting a brick wall. Do any of you think that by basically creating a submersible that looked similar in desighn to an aircraft, with the same wing lift and drag ratios. That by useing air or a lighter element to create and keep a virtual air buble around the ship that it would correct and illiminate the heavy mass problem.Thin making it PROBABLE to achieve MACH + speeds???? INPUT PLEASE thanks
