In my chem lab, we had a solution of 1 drop bleach (5.25% NaOCl) and 1 drop 0.1M HCl. After it reacted for a bit, we added 1 drop of NH3. The question is "explain how this terminates the reaction using words and chemical equations." I think I get the word part (wouldn't the NH3 just neutralize the HCl, and then the NH3 doesn't react with the NaOCl?) but what about the equations?

NH3 reacts with both HCl and NaOCl. With HCl it forms NH4Cl, with NaOCl it forms cloramine (NH2Cl - gas) and lye (NaOH).
