First off, there was no year zero, the years go straight from 1 BC to 1 AD.

I'm not sure there was a whole lot of science going on in the "western" world at that time - you may want to investigate what was going on in China or other areas.

It was confusing!
Immediately after the Hellenistic times, people were trying to figure out what is the Truth! The Roman Empire did not want to adopt fully the Greek ideas and ideals, thus they were searching for new in order to create the New World Order!
Since the Romans never reached the Greeks and parallel they did not want to continue on the Greek achievements, they were destroying what they could and introduce a devastating system which led to Christianity!
