Imagine you've got a gear train consisting of a large cogwheel on the same axle as a small cogwheel with, say a quarter as many teeth. A large cogwheel drives a small one and its adjacent large cogwheel drives the next small cogwheel, and this arrangement is repeated several times to give a high gear ratio. Each stage increases the ratio by a factor of 4. With the best materials, bearings and lubrication, what's the highest ratio you could achieve in practice?

The Ken Than article in space.com also on CNN.com tells about an exoplanet (around a star other than our own) that is a "gas giant" around Upsilon Andromeda, a star some 40 light years away. The trick is that it seemingly has a sunlit side temperature between 2500 and 3000 F (1400-1650 C) and -4 to -450 F on the dark side (they think it is tidally locked, so the same side always faces its star). The planet has a "tight orbit" and goes around every 4.6 days.

If it is a "gas" giant, and the gas is heated to some 3k F, how can it have such a cold other side. I can see that for a rocky planet, but gases expand and move when hot, and condense and sink when cold. Why would there be no circulation that moderates the temperatures? Any ideas? http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/space/10/13/fire.ice.planet/index.html

Is that what is going on in quantum mechanics when we talk about the equivalence of Schrodinger mechanics and Heisenberg matrix mechanics? Since one is a vector space composed of differential equations and the other a vector space composed of matrices. Is that why Dirac came up with bra ket notation...to express quantum mechanics in terms of a general vector space? I'm just curious.

A manufacturer makes two models of an item: model I, which accounts for 80% of unit sales, and model II, which accounts for 20% of unit sales. Because of defects, the manufacturer has to replace 10% of its model I and 18% of its model II. If a model is selected at random, find the probability that it will be defective.

I need to know how to get to the answer most importantly.

An 82 Newton trunk is accelerating along a plank inclined at 26 degrees from the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction of the trunk and plank is .20
What is the value of F sub g
the value of f sub g of x
the value of f sub g of y
the value of the normal force
the value of friction
the value of the net force

What will happen to the acceleration of the trunk if the elevated end of the plank is raised? Why?

What will happen to the motion of the trunk if it reaches a section of the plank where the coefficient of sliding friction makes the frictional force equal to the magnitude of the horizontal component of the weight force?
