I watched the tape of the space shuttle Atlantis take off. When the shuttle reached orbit the shuttle was separated from the external fuel tank. The tank began to fall to earth, yet the shuttle stayed in orbit. This is my question, why did the external fuel tank fall and the shuttle did not?

I think i have the answers, but i am not sure about the method. Can you check these and tell me why i am right?

1) A force accelerates a body of mass M. The same force applied to a second body produces three times the acceleration. What is the mass of the second body?
My friend tells me the answer is M/3 and i don't understand why.

2) A mass m is hanging on a string that passes over a pulley and is then attached to another mass 3m that is resting on a horizontal table. Neglect friction. Mass m is held motionless and is then released. When it has fallen a distance h, it will have a speed v. Find the formula for v.
On this one, i get the squareroot(gh/2), but as i am following my work, parts of it don't make sense to me. Can you show me if this is correct or not?

This is it for now, thanks so much!!!!!

The question is:

"To raise the temperature of a mass of water from 25.0 degrees C tp 50.0 degrees C requires 7.5 kcal. Calculate the mass of water in grams. (specifric heat of water= 1.0 cal/ (g) (degrees C)

The formula I got was

Q/ ΔT x C=M

However, the answer is incorrect. Can someone please explain and demonstrate how to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

For instance I have heard that you can urinate and it will filter out soil bacteria and urine from the bottom water when evaporating it and you will be fine. Similarly with ocean water I've heard it can de-salinize that too and presumably filter out the bacteria.

But do solar stills work on ALL water contaminants? For instance during Hurricane Katrina would the solar still filter out all of the chemical and biological contaminants in that very dirty water too?

Basically what are the limits in terms of what solar stills can filter out, if there are any limits.

Can anyone help me solve this question? Thanks a lot for your help!

How can an object in uniform circular motion be moving at a constant speed and at the same time be constantly accelerating? For this same object, can we apply the following equations of motion:

v(final) = v(initial) + at
d(final) = d(initial) + v(initial) t + 1/2 at2 ?
