The Northern hemisphere is way below the average elevation for the planet. Also, it seems a lot smoother than that pockmarked southern hemisphere. The North pole of Mars also sits on top of a dome that's almost 3 kilometers above the surrounding area.

To help you give me a better answer, here are a few more pictures of Martian phenomena:

Craters centered on other craters:

Craters with mounds raised in the middle, that resemble results of electric arcs striking clay anodes in lab experiments (note the how the mud "sweats" away from the crater):

and the "collapsed lava tubes" of Ascraeus Mons (plasma scars):

I'm puzzled by the time paradox of near-light-speed travel. If time would seem to pass more slowly to a high-speed traveller, why wouldn't it also seem to pass more slowly from the perspective of light, itself? In other words, why do we say that it takes light a year to travel a light year? To us, perhaps, it does, but from the light's perspective, wouldn't it take much less time to go that distance, or even no time at all? And, if not, why not?

An instructor is planning on giving a multiple choice test. Recognizing that students may use a guessing strategy, she wants to deduct points for providing the wrong answer. The test will consist of 25 problems, each with 5 choices. The instructor will award 4 points for a correct answer, but wants the expected value of the grade to be 0 for a student who gueses. How would the penalty work?

What if the test consisted of 20 problems with 4 choices each? 5 points for a correct answer. What is the penalty?

What if the test had 30 problems with 3 choices each? 3 and 1/3 points for a correct answer. What's the penalty?

What if the test had 50 true/false type problems. 2 choices and 2 points for each correct answer. What's the penalty?

**If anyone can help to solve this problem, please tell me if there's some formula you have to use to solve it. I have a statistics book, but have no idea which formula, if any, I should use to solve it. Thanks!!!**

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but it genuinely frustrates me and I'd like to know if there is a logical explanation for it. You can spend a good deal of time carefully and neatly rolling up a cable and then have it sitting there for a month where no-one has touched or disturbed it in any way, and yet when you go to use the cable, you find it tangled and knotted. WHY???

OK, first of all, I live in Northwest Montana. Not sure if that will help, but maybe, if the tree I am thinking of only grows in certain areas. I absolutely love the fragrance this tree puts out when it blooms each year (always right about now; mid-June), but I have never been very near to one. I have just smelled them when I drive by people's yards and there is a tree growing there. This tree doesn't get too big, even when full grown. Bigger than an apple tree, but not as big as an oak. It has very distinctive silvery-green leaves, longer than they are wide. It has dark-ish bark. When it blooms, it has a pervasive, sweet odor. I have been told that it may be a Russian Olive tree, does this sound right?
