what do you all think about russia claiming to to own the oil in the north pole becos they got there first and put their flag there, just as the U.S. got on the moon first and put its flag on it too?

I'm just recalling after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was discovered that the environment was ignored in favor of manufacturing, mining, energy pursuits, etc. With China's explosive growth as well as increasing position in the world economy, do we know whether they take any environmental precautions? Is there any conservation? I recall reading about a hydro-power project (seven gorges? three gorges?) where a dam was built which relocated over a million people. The flooded towns- were they cleaned up prior to being submerged? Does anyone (or CAN anyone) monitor the environment there?

I would really like to know because it seems very little to me because anything major the government does the negotiating and opting out. New regulations are imposed by Eurpeon Civil Servants who seem to be employed to make us all as miserable as possible

Who thinks we should strengthen ties with the EU and drop the apparent 'special relationship' we share with the States?
I do 'cos they really do believe they own the world, and always have to save our and Europe's asses (ITS ARSES!!). Id much rather share a special relationship with nations like Germany or France, 'cos they need the UK to have a serious influence on the world as we're the three richest nations in Europe.
