Will Turkey ever be admitted to the European Union without admitting its role in the Armenian genocide?

Turkey has already managed to join NATO, but will it have to own up to its role in the Armenian Genocide during the First Word War before it can join the EU?

I think they'll eventually have to, but it has little to do with the wrongness of the genocide.

When it comes to Turkey and the EU, I'm a cynic and I think the French, Germans, and Greeks will lob as many reasons as they can find to keep Turkey out but at the same time not piss it off to the point where Turkey abandons the EU. With the Armenian genocide issue, they've found a winner. As long as Turkey remains resolute against acknowledging it, the French can keep using genocide and the issue of human rights to say Turkey's not ready, while at the same time saying they've made progress in other areas like the economy. And I think if ever Turkey does finally admit to the genocide, the French and others will simply find other reasons to keep delaying on Turkey.

Unlike NATO, the EU is primarily an economic union (notwithstanding talk of a constitution). So it can afford to wait Turkey out in the long term whereas NATO during the Cold War needed Turkey for immediate defense concerns (and besides, at the time Armenia was part of the "enemy" USSR so the genocide issue didn't matter).

Finally I think Turkey's leaders know that even if they admit to the genocide, it won't guarantee any acceleration of EU cooperation but it will surely cost them a lot within the sphere of domestic politics. They won't do it until the cost/benefit analysis somehow shifts in their favor, which could still be a decade away.

I don't think so. Even it Turkey admits it has committed genocide, i don't think that Europe is ready to accept Turkey. While France is in the EU, i think it is safe to say that TR won't be joining.
Yes, we all know that TR is not the Ottoman empire, we all know that the Turkish ppl have all evolved to a more western way of life, but we can't deny that the government, bu refusing to admit the genocide is giving an impression that Turkey is still in problem.
And one could also say that ppl are just not ready to accept a muslim country into their alliance.

Probably not. Besides, there are too many issues that need to be resolved besides the genocide in order to allow Turkey to become member of the EU. Turkey has huge unemployment and poverty problems that it needs to resolve first. Germany is probably against Turkey joining the EU, since there are many Turkish immigrants in Germany, and if Turkey were to join the EU, there would probably be a massive wave of Turkish immigrants moving into Germany. Turkey needs to admit the Armenian genocide, solve some of its poverty and unemployment issues, as well as convince Germany to be in favor of having Turkey be a member of the EU.

I hope not. That's not the only crime of turkey.

1. Turkey bombed cyprus in 1963 and invaded Cyprus in 1974. Since then turkey occupies 40% of the Republic of Cyprus.

2. Also, almost every day turkey violates the international law by entering the Greek FIR (Greek air Space) by flying over the greek sea.

3. Turkey is at war with the kurdish people that want to liberate their country from the turkish rule. There are bombing attacks in turkey, for that reason, almost every month.

4. Turkey is no a european country and turks are not a european nation. If turkey enters then who is going to follow ? Marocco ? Syria ? Lebanon ? Mongolia ?

5. The armenian genocide is a historical fact. It was part of a plan of the turks to get rid of all the christian populations of Asia minor. They did the same to the pontic greeks that they were living in northern turkey at the moment.

I can go on forever with the crimes of turks against humanity, I just wanna state that the turkish people today is proud of these actions or they do everything they can to deny it.

I envy you for believing that the EU genuinely imposes any of these sensitive issues as to the criteria for admission. I'm not being sarcastic, I've lost faith in this whole EU business and I don't like to see my beliefs go down the drain on account of somebody abusing their authority.
It may sound cynical, but all that comes to mind is: they will be admitted if it suits someone else's needs and vice versa. Unfortunately. Cyprus has unresolved issues, Slovenia has the now notorious maltreatment of Roma population and other minorities, not to speak of Croatia, a candidate for member state, which holds an unworthy record in returned refugees settled back to their homes before the Yugoslav war. It doesn't seem to bother the EU officials as far as I can see. So why should Turkey be any different? The whole thing about the Armenian genocide happened because it suited the powers of that day and age to sweep it under the carpet, on account of Turkey's role against Russia.

There are many reasons why the Turkey verses the EU is not a clash of civilizations. Although all members of the European Union are primarily Christian, religion is not a reason to deny admission to the EU. Turkey is a large nation that is very poor, with not much to offer politically or economically. They are attempting to westernize in many ways, for example although their government is still Islamic they have formed a democracy. Turkey still has to show that they have enforced their laws rather than just having written them and start to apply them to their daily lives. Economically Turkey does not have much to offer as far as international and domestic trade. If they were to become a part of the EU they would receive many benefits from the other members but without being as of much help as all members should. The EU also has reason not to permit them to join because they have yet to prove themselves in the area of human rights within their country. These statements all prove that the conflict is based more on Turkey’s st :wink: :arrow: :arrow: ature then their civilization and culture. Rather than a fault line separating Turkey and the EU, there is a gap differentiating the two nations concerning political, economic, and social aspects.

Maybe not directly, but the EU will expect at least a token gesture of that kind. You know, like the fact that Turkey didn't recognize cyprus, but allows ships from there to enter their ports, which is almost a recognition.

The US ,Canada,Australia and many more countries have been admitted to many International Organizations without ADMITTING TO THEIR TOTAL ROLE IN THE GENOCIDE OF THE NATIVE/INDIGENOUS peoples.

Turkish people don't care joining to EU anymore. If they can't that won't make any sense. And also let's learn a Little bit history.
If there would be a Genocide no one could deny it. See Germany couldn't deny the genocide. And also If there was Genocide how come after 100 years still there aren't any serious documents about It exists? Stop spreading lies. It won't work. Genocide is a lie.
