A "death" at this point clears his name because a death before the the extinction of a criminal appeal period sets aside and permanently vacates the conviction. Obviously he was not currently imprisoned, so by "dying" now, he also avoid pmita prison time. Therefore, this was the perfect opportunity in time for him to "die."
Finally - motive. One motive for his "death" is that it makes it more likely to for his family and "widow" to retain the family fortune.
