Because it's PC. White people don't mind being called "white".
And the media does not always use the term african americans, I have heard many media reports where they have said "black" as opposed to african american.

Why refer to ethnicity at all? Polish American, African American, Italian American. Do the labels mean anything anymore? I knew a guy whose parents emigrated to U.S. When he applied for college, he marked, "African American" on the financial aid forms. When he went to pickup the check so that he could pay for school, he was threatened with arrest. It seems that his parents were from South Africa. What should he have marked on his form? Male or female is really all that should be mentioned.
By the way, his financial aid was reduced.

I cannot speak for the media but I can explain why I prefer African American to black. Sociologists agree that four characteristics are necessary in order to be classified as a human being as opposed to lower animals. In order to be a person you must have: 1) language, 2) history, 3) culture, and 4) land.
Europeans stripped Africans of these four essential qualities to justify enslaving African people. Most people of European descent know what country their ancestors came from and if they do not they can easily trace their heritage using documents and records. It is nearly impossible for most people of African descent in any North, South, or Central America to trace their heritage with any accuracy.
It is not unusual to hear other ethnic groups celebrating their heritage. We have October fest, St. Patrick's Day. Larger cities have a little Italy, China town, etc. It is acceptable for other ethnic groups to refer to their ancestors from the "Old Country." Since I cannot say for sure that I am Ghanaian or Malian or Nigerian with any certainty the closest I can come is to say that I am African American.
