I was watching the news today and what struck me was the attitude Turkey has towards the Pope's visit. What is their problem and how are they even considering entering the European Union with this type of attitude (lets not even stress the Cyprus issue). What are your thoughts?

An entire English village was captured by African slavers and taken away prior to any English slave trade, so following Blair's reasoning African Governments should apologise for that? African Nations already practised slavery before the English or before them the Arabs started slaving. Finally, I have never enslaved anyone, nothing for me to apologise for and therefore nothing for the government, since they just the representatives of myself and other UK citizens, including UK citizens of African descent. The argument that because by some chance of birth I am guilty for the sins of previous generations is false

Personally, I think the person is a scam artist. She states her ex destroyed everything in August leaving her with absolutely nothing yet is asking for an upgraded computer (leaving us to believe she has one), playstation 2 games and dvd's (once again leading us to believe she has a playstation 2), and misc. necessities. It's been all of three months since this was supposed to have occured and she was able to obtain these items but not the basic necessities.
What is your take on it? Do you think it's a scam or do you think she is for real?

Political Correctness just seems to be another rigid ideology, brooking no contradition or opposition, and stifling freedom of speech, expression and thought, certainly for those whose views dont match the PC world view. What right do the PC brigade have to impose their particular set of ideals on society, the workplace, govornment, the education system etc? Who says THEY are right. Also, their views are also often patronising to those they purport to be protecting, assuming certain groups all have chips on their shoulders, suffer from persecution complexes, or paranoia. They often exacerbate problems, as well as fascisticly stifle free speech and actively persecute those not like them. Fascism?

I am a journalism student and I am writing a story about the increase in Internet shopping after Thanksgiving. Today Nov. 27 is known as "Cyber Monday". If you are shopping online at work today I would appricate a comment that I could quote in my story. Like where you are shopping and what for. Please give me your full name if possible and where you are from.

It seems a little crazy to me. Slavery was a awful thing (and still is in some parts of the world), but was abolished around 200 years ago in Britain. What need is there for 21st Century Britain to apologise for something that happened in a different age with different values. Should Blair also apologise for 18th Century laws that allowed the hanging of children for stealing bread, press ganging etc? Should modern Germany continue to apologise for the war? Should Italy apologise for enslaving Britons 2000 years ago? Slavery goes back to the very earliest civilisations, and continued long after Britain abolished it(Belgium, Portugal, USA, Spain, Arabs, Turks & Black Africans carried on long after). Britain actually went to war with Black African kingdoms, Arabs and others in 19th Century to prevent slavery.
History should surely be judged in the context of its time!

Yep. Its about this 200 year thing of freeing the slaves.

But, as far as I can see, slavery was around since the Egyptians, 7 millennia ago. It was still around during every empire the world has ever seen.

Then the Brits made an empire, profited – like every other empire and nearly all countries – through slavery.

The only difference was that the British middle class became wealthy and politically vocal and chose to abolish slavery throughout the empire and to pressure its trading partners to do the same.

They were the first people to do it…..ever!

Is this celebration more of a thank you to the British middle class rather than a sorry for 10,000 years of a legal and legitimate trade?
