No, people are getting larger, here are two articles to read
Settle Times
"Obesity is considered a major public-health problem, but many scientists are coming to see it as a comparative blessing, given the alternative. These public-heath experts believe, in effect, that America may have traded smoking — a truly lethal habit — for the lesser deadliness of eating too much. "
From across the country this article is from the
Boston Globe
"A new analysis of data collected by ongoing long-term national surveys indicated that the average adult was about an inch taller in 2002 than in 1960 andin 2002 weighed nearly 25 pounds more."

As a completely un-biased overweight person myself I can tell you first hand that in America there are a large number of overweight people. From 20lbs overweight to 300lbs+ overweight. The media isn't blowing this out of proportion. In fact in the US they are referring to it as an 'Obesity crisis'.
I hope the answer I've given helps :)

It's all the stuff they put in the food. Some peoples bodies can handle it while others plump up like a Turkey. It's a conspiracy to fatten up the population to sacrifice us to the coming anti-Christ. The fatter you are the more likely you'll be chosen.

It can't be the media and magazines. I never see "large" people on their shows or pages. Only little thin people.

There are many large people here. The really huge people are in the minority, but we do have a lot of overweight people here.

Absolutely! The majority are overweight.
Blame it on the fast food industry and television/video games/computers..
