So far, out of the fifty or so tomatoes that are on the vines, only about four of them have turned red and been ready for harvest. The balance are in varied states of growth, but a lot are big. When will they turn red? Is it possible never? This is my first year of growing. Thank you for any suggestions.

Yesterday, I asked about why there was a leathery bottom on my tomatoes. Angel had the best answer, lack of calcium, although I said it was someone else. SORRY

i live in the middle of nowhere, so i have alot of space to grow a garden. i don't want a huge one, just one that i can grow tomatoes and grapes and other things like that. we have 11 acres, and most of it is our front yard. i want to keep the garden pretty close to the house so i can keep an eye on it, since we have deer and raccoons out here.

so, what can i do to:
protect the fruit/vegetables
get the seeds (apples, tomatoes, grapes, strawberries, and carrots)

and how do i set up a garden, or what book should i buy that would help me? thank you!

We got a good price on a house whose yard was mostly weeds, such as crabgrass, dandelions, bindweed, foxtails, etc. When we mow it, it looks almost like a real lawn, but the weeds grow back fast.

We don't have the proper equipment to do a new lawn. We're thinking of mowing it very low, doing some dethatching, aerating, etc., and then planting lots of Kentucky Bluegrass seeds. Our theory is that the KBG will eventually grow well enough to choke out the weeds. We plan to keep mowing the weeds low while waiting for the KBG to sprout, and then keep mowing slightly higher than the sprouts, so the weeds will have a hard time outcompeting the KBG.

Part of the problem is a slope where heavy rains would wash the dirt if no weeds held it in place.

Does this plan have a chance in hell to succeed?

I am moving from flowers to shrubs because of age and health. I know tons about flowers but as I buy shrubs and bushes, I would like to know honest practical adivse FROM THOSE WHO KNOW NOT WEB SITES. I love this little bush, it is pretty, It says 3 ftx 3 ft. What specifics can you tell me. I know I was looking at the cute upright trees like this and my friends said they attract spider mites and will eat my dahlias. What kind of sun, water, etc. I have good soil. I am starting to buy shrubs and bushes and I know I had this as a hedge when I moved into a house about 20 years ago. The only thing I remembers is to keep it trimmed when needed and it got mildew on its leaves, but it was on the north side, the worse here in So Or zone 7. Does it grow fast ? Can I take cuttings ? What does it like we have very hot summers over 100 1/3 of the summer and no rain and wet winters. I want it to grow tall by my city fenced in back yard for privacy but would like to know about it from those who actually have used it. thanks

I live in zone 7 in So Or and I have purchased on clearance, the only way I can go :), 5 1 gallong Oregon Grape. I grow tons of flowers and have for years but I'm older and moving into planting bushes and shrubs, so especially what kind of sun conditons, where I want to plant it , it will be shaded until about 9-10 a.m. in summer and then get full sun the rest of the day., ?????says it likes acid soil, can I just feed it this way ? and it says this one grows 3-6 ft tall, :) privacy issues here. I'll take any clues you'd like to offer, but if you don't personally know Oregon grape, please don't just send me to sites, I've already been there. Thanks

Hey all. I have a couple of Southern Magnolias (the original strain) One is about 8 feet in height and the other maybe 4. I live near St. Louis, MO and it gets fairly cold from mid October or so through Early April. I currently have them in 3-5 gallon planters filled with miracle grow soil. My question is how can I minimize winter damage (snow, cold winds ect??) I mean I could move them near my hot tub out of the wind but they wouldn't get as much sun (if any) I also have some DD Blanchard Varieties planted but supposedly they can tolerate the cold. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

i read on the internet that next year if i "pinch off the stems" this will help the plant to grow fuller with more blooms. what part of the plant am i pinching off??

I got a small 3 gallon size papaya at Walmart today. It appears to have 3 small trees in the same pot, no more than 2 feet tall each.

I thought papayas were self fertile, but I guess not? What does "pollenated" mean? Does that I have both male and female trees in my pot? Or does that mean it is self fertile?

Also, at this size, how long do you think it will take to fruit?

Thanks. :)

We just bought a house and want to start with the landscaping first. Eventually (maybe even this year) we'll get city water and then they take the septic tank out. Should we just wait? Or are there any plants/bushes we can put over it? Thanks!

My potted rose tree produced a lot of beautiful blossoms when I first got it in the begtinning of summer. After the blooms finished blossoming, I trimmed them down, thinking I'd get new growth, but there's no sign of new growth. It's been over a month now. Also, some of the leaves are turning yellow and brown. I water the tree at least every other day, so I don't think it's from lack of water. Help!!
