So far, out of the fifty or so tomatoes that are on the vines, only about four of them have turned red and been ready for harvest. The balance are in varied states of growth, but a lot are big. When will they turn red? Is it possible never? This is my first year of growing. Thank you for any suggestions.

The bigger varieties are probably heirloom varieties(open-pollinated) that are older, and require a longer growing season. Some require 2 - 2 1/2 months to ripen (from transplanting, not from seed). Ponderosa, beefheart, beefsteak, ( I`m sure you`ve heard of these, and others) are some names of these varieties. Also, back off using so much nitrogen fertilizer (the first ingredient in most multi-fertilizers, such as 10-10-10). It promotes foliage growth and keeps the fruit green longer. If your plants are healthy, have just a little more patience.

Various types of tomatoes have different growing times-i,.e. 60 days, 70 days, etc. Unless you planted cherry tomatoes or something like Early Girl, you probably won't have them turning red until at least August 15. Big Boys take a really long time. The heaviest harvest is usually September.

To see when the other tomatoes turn red, keep an eye on them. If they haven't turned red by the end of September, harvest a whole bunch of green tomatoes and fry them!

are they all red tomatoes? then they will ripen as time goes on unless you mean different colored varieties. then you just have to wait and see....you can help to speed the process by pinching off the feeder shoots( which grow between the stem and leaves) I also break off any really big leaf stems with no flowers on the,. and water daily a Good tomato fertilizer helps too.
also if they do not all ripen before first first.. you can use the green tomatoes up in cooking or canning....just check the net for green tomato recipes....or ripen them on the windowsill

They'll eventually turn red. Just be patient. Give them another week or two.
