Looking for advice about organising parties?

I'm gonna have a garden party next month but I'm really stuck about who to invite! Any list I make has either too many people or too few! I'm also really stuck about what guys to invite- I don't know any!!! I can't leave it as an open invitation cos no doubt i'l get gate crashers and I want to keep it reasonably controlled. Please give me advice about how to invite people I don't really know and how to make a good list of not too many people!
