In western society we worship celebrities. What on earth makes a celebrity so special?

I can understand if they posess amazing talents. ie Cate Blanchett is an extraordinary actress. But, for instance what is the go with Britney Spears? Average in every way. Average looking, very average voice. What it's all about.
