Doctors "practice" medicine. Dentists "practice" dentistry. Where did this phrase intiate? Shouldn't there be a more affirmative phrase given the importance of there jobs? I do agree that Lawyers "practice", however.

I really just want the meanings. For example, the name Earl means "Noble Warrior" and is derived from old English. You don't have to tell me your real christian name, I am just curious about its meaning and whether or not you think it suits you. It's a silly question.

For example, was walking a forest track with friends one time, we came to a sign post which had a multitude of directions on it,,,, my buddy turned to me and said, " look, if we go to the right, we can get to the wharf from here",,,, "s'funny", he said, "every time I see that word, I always think that it's more like a dog would say!" P'raps you had to be there at the time but I nearly wet, when he said that,,I laughed and laughed.....I do enjoy the English language, for all it's faults and foibles, or maybe the faults and foibles are all just just mine,, no matter.
Just wondered,,, do you have some picturesque words like that for me?

What a weird little letter...

First it's not a "double-u", it's a double V!

Second, why do all the other letters have quick one syllable names, but the letter "w" has a three-syllable pronunciation!

Strange...
