It's part of a history essay. It just seems like my sentences are too long, and I don't know how to organize it and make it flow easier.

The colonists believed also that when their government fails them, or fails to provide security of their rights, the same people who gave them the right to govern should also have the ability to take that right away or change its parameters so that the government will “build its foundation on such principles”. The colonists felt that long standing governments should not be changed for petty reasons; however, when there is a long series of abuses of authoritative power, to the point that the government tries to reduce a society’s human rights, then it becomes the “duty” of the governed to overthrow such a government.

My history professor seems to think he's also an English professor and grades pretty strict on our essays. What's the best way to write this intro? Here's what have:

The Declaration of Independence, established in 1776, is an important document to United States history. British colonists outlined many reasons for the decision to declare independence from England to include, what the colonists felt a proper relationship between governments and the people should include, the neglect of duties imposed upon King George III, and the failure of the British government to respond to the pleas and heed the warnings of the colonists as the British government usurpation on colonist's lives became more apparent.

Can egotistical and conceited be used synonymously with each other. For example, how would you solve this problem.
If Helen of Troy were a conceited woman, would that mean she had a just high opinion of herself, in other words she knew she was beautiful and demonstrated it

or

would it mean she had an overly high opinion of herself. In other words, she thought she was more beautiful than she really was.

I just want to understand this.
