My friend has just delivered a baby...and i wanted to say..." I dont know how to CARRY a baby".. can you tell me is it incorrect if i use the word 'CARRY'?, because what i wanted to say was, to hold or to play or to carry a baby.. (i don't know which word to use, so i endup using the word carry) but if you understand what i meant, can you help giving me the correct words to use or the correct sentance i should use?
i know i've used the incorrect word with a friend and it was so embarrasing.. please help.. thanks :)

So, i should not use the word CARRY and should replace it with HOLD.. because by using CARRY, they will intepret it wrongly right?

I would say, "I would love to hold your baby. Will you please show me the correct way?"
Babies are much tougher than they look, and it's highly unlikely that you will do anything to harm him. The most common way to hold a baby is to put its butt in the crook of your arm,and let it rest against your body. Your upper arm will support his head as he lays against you.
Use your free hand to rub his face and hair, and reach for anything you might need, such as a pacifier or a burping towel.
Relax, and enjoy the moment.

Since your friend just had the baby, you don't have to worry about the fact that you don't know how to play with the baby just yet. :)
Just tell your friend that you have never been around a baby before and you are not sure how you are suppose to handle the baby. If this person is a true friend, she will see your comments for the concern they are meant to show and she will teach you the proper way to both handle the baby.
Babies are small and kind of scary because you are afraid you will hurt them. They aren't, however, as fragile as you might be afraid they are. Just be gentle, take your time, and let someone know as soon as you aren't sure you know what you are doing. (Handing the baby to someone else can be tricky.)
Your friend will appreciate your honest about your lack of experience and you shouldn't be embarrassed at all.
Good luck and enjoy your new little friend!

You already answered your question. The correct way would have been: I am totally inexperienced in holding a baby. The word carry a baby is mostly used by women who are expecting. English is my second language, hope I interpreted correctly.

"How do I hold the baby?", because in general, carry is used for inanimate nonmoving things. I don't think your friend would really dwell on your error, because we all make mistakes sometimes. We're human.

You could just say, "I would like to hold the baby but I'm kinda nervous, can you give me any pointers?"
