Can egotistical and conceited be used synonymously with each other. For example, how would you solve this problem.
If Helen of Troy were a conceited woman, would that mean she had a just high opinion of herself, in other words she knew she was beautiful and demonstrated it

or

would it mean she had an overly high opinion of herself. In other words, she thought she was more beautiful than she really was.

I just want to understand this.

Okay, the basic definition of conceited is that it means thinking highly of oneself. You're wondering if it also implies that the "high thinking" is true or not?

In general, when someone is "conceited" it means that they favor themselves over their peers, even when there is little or no evidence that they are superior in anyway. In this manner, I would say the SECOND explanation above best applies.

There would be little to criticize about someone being "conceited" if they were better in the first place.

I lean toward synonymous. Neither is a good thing to be in life. Seems Roget's agrees with me....smiling.

Both conceited and egotistical have a negative conotation.
So I agree with your second example.

i think they are both reasonable answer.
just because if you think someone is conceited then you think she's full of herself and stuck up. but some people think different things.
