Since each twig bears one piece of fruit, how many plums will the farmer be able to deliver?

I have been reading the first book of his childhood abuse, and it seems that his mother gets away with it. The only thing that happens is the autorities take him away from her, but she never pays for the horrible deeds she has committed so I was wondering if there was some kind of punishment in the end.
