Cows sleep or rest laying down, if they are up they are probably grazing. We have noticed a funny thing, when the cows are up feeding, the fish in the pond will be biting, but if the cows are all resting, you won't be able to get a bite.

Cows lie down usually after eating because they have more than one stomach and need to digest food. If you see them bunch up and lay down, say under a tree, you can usually count on it raining soon. They group up prior to rain and they do not stand up in a open field.....lighning targets.
