This brief uses data from the 2003 National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES) to estimate the number of homeschooled students in the United States in 2003 and to discuss the reasons parents decide to homeschool their children. The brief also shows that the number of homeschoolers, and the proportion of the student population they represent, has increased since 1999. More here: http://nces.ed.gov/nhes/homeschool/

My daughter is going to gr8 next year and I am contemplating homeshooling for the following reasons: I recently started working 9-5 after 2years and there is a drop in school marks, she seems to need constant encouragement; she is very intelligent but lazy and loves music, friends & the normal stuff teenagers do, but I get the feeling she thinks is is at school just for the friends part of it- I do not want her to not have contact with friends though. I would like to be there for her because I feel she needs guidance, encouragemnt, etc... This is a serious problem for me as I am just so scared I deprive her of other friends her age, she is a social child and very popular, but in my heart I know she is going to struggle in high school. What do you suggest?

Home schoolers often take many outside classes such as art, music, dance, martial arts, etc. They participate in co-op classes, mentorships in various fields, and many high school age kids take classes at their local community college. Some even start small businesses while preparing for college or adult life. We have a hard time finding days to stay home, perhaps community schooling would be more accurate and help alleviate some of the stereotype of a child stuck at the kitchen table all day with mom. What do you think?

How do you feel when people say they are homeschooling and then talk about the online program they are enrolled in? Am I wrong, or isn't homeschool when a parent teaches the child, not a professional teacher with 20 or 30 (or more) online students?

I guess it just kind of bugs me that we are all lumped together. Is there a way to separate the purists from the "otherly" schooled?

Don't get me wrong - there's nothing wrong with the online schools - heaven knows I may have to consider it as my kids get older. I'm just not sure I would put it in the same category as homeschool.

I am 9 years old, and I am homeschooled, I want to feel normal beong homeschooled, but somehow I just can't. I don't know what to do. I try pretending I am at school, and it still doesn't help. I totally DON'T want to go to school, but I can't help thinking it might make me feel normal. You may not be able to help, I was just wondering if anyone might be able to.

Do you make a portfolio of your child's school work, and if so, what does it consist of? My state (CT) requires that I do so.

i live in Georgia, and the principal at school told me if I homeschool I will have to purchase and use the same books that the schoolsystem teach with at public schools. Is this true? And also, where can I find out the basics they must learn at home to pass standardized tests every 2/3 years so that i can make sure that they have learned everything to pass the test. What is the name of the test?

My school day begins with studying something that has to do with either science, geograghy,or history(like reading or writing reports).then I do two lessons of language arts on the computer(using switched on schoolhouse). Then I do two lessons of Saxon math on the computer also. Then I do bible study, and finally I write one page of anything I want to write about to practise grammer and penmenship. It all takes about 2 to 2 and a half hours. So,I was wondering how school days go for other home schoolers, and what they have to do and how long it takes.just curious.
