Home Schooling

[Selected]: All categories Education & Reference Home Schooling

I was homeschooled until I was 14. I started college at the age of 16. I graduated early with a 3.5 GPA while working 30 hours per week. Throughout my education, I was 2 grades ahead in math & science. I was actively involved with homeschool groups. I've met hundreds of homeschoolers in my life.
That being said, I would like to pose some questions. These are NOT personal attacks and you don't have to justify anything to me. I'm just curious as to the motivation behind homeschooling.
#1. What is your highest level of completed education?
#2. Why are you homeschooling your children?
#3. What impact do you believe homeschooling has on your child's social development? ("None" is not an acceptable answer)
#4. Should anyone be allowed to educate their own children? Why?
#5. Through what grade level do you plan on teaching your children? Why?

These are my 3rd and 4th kids to go through American School and we are struggling with the math yet again. One of the older kids, who has now graduated college, has looked at the latest partial her brother got and said it doesn't make sense. Are there any chat groups or study groups online for help?

PLEASE HELP!!! i missed 4 years of school...my life at home was a nightmare...abuse..neglect..no routine...no going anywhwere...no normal life whatsoever...I don't have a clue what a normal life involves. as a consequence of being out of school for 4 years I got G grades in my GCSEs (apart from a D grade in English) after this happened....I really didn't know what to do/how to handle the situation. I stuidly sat at home doing nothing till I am now 18. i am in a state of real panic. How can I fix my education. I am 18.. would home education be an option?? If so then what organisations do I need to contact? How can I find out about home education? it would take me about 4/5 years of home tuition ....I'd be 23 by that time.....as I missed about 4/5 years of school. How could this work? I'm scared...because I just want to catch up...and catch up with where I'm meant to be in life. How could I learn stuff like cooking? what a cv is? etc.... hwo many hours and in which subjects should I take

Homeschooling is a great way to make a child book smart. The down side is that homeschooling hinders social development. Homeschool kids tend to become brilliantly educated and social retarded. By sheltering your child, you prevent them from learning how to deal with everyday social situations. Homeschoolers are shy for the most part and lack interpersonal skills.

1. Is it worth trading a childs social life for a "better" education?
2. Are you really qualified to teach your child if you don't have a teaching degree?
3. Which would be better for the child: homeschooling or active parental involvement in public schooling?
4. How do you plan on developing your childs social skills if you are homeschooling them? Homeschool groups are like social special ed classes and don't help children develop social skills that can be applied later on in life.
5. Can you teach you kids to be religious without teaching them everything else?

Or rather, how many homeschooled students do you know who watch TV and play computer all day?

According to Mr. Z, who apparently is able to teach you ALL about homeschooling because he's a certified teacher and most homeschooling parents aren't, although he's never actually studied homeschooling:

" Well, you get to sit at home and play on your computer all day, and watch TV, and do just about anything you want, cause your parents quickly realize that they can't do the job, so they let the computer do the job instead. It's kinda like being turned into a robot, so that's kinda bad, but who cares...I get to do whatever I want! I guess it's up to you to decide which of this is an advantage and which is a disadvantage. Me, I love it. I don't have to do ANYTHING I don't want to do. "

Mr. Z (Douglas), and anybody else who believes this nonsense, please tell me how many homeschoolers you PERSONALLY KNOW you do this? I don't know any, and I know a LOT of homeschoolers.

We know about Glenn Doman and flashcards. We know about Baby Einstein and Mozart. We know about the simpler and obvious things such as reading to them, and have read the books AGAINST early learning. We went to, past, and through them to more advanced things. Our daughter has flourished. We want more. She wants more. She's talking at age 10, constantly getting comments on her physical skills and happy nature, and SHE controls when we do the lessons (she's voracious).

Any suggestions from those who have discovered your own ideas? We also welcome correspondance with those who would like ideas of their own, as we developed quite a few techniques.

Although this is a free forum, and anyone can answer, I would prefer not to wade through the comments of people that are so needy they HAVE to comment on anything BUT the question and give information totally unwanted to satisfy their own sense of worth. We've read, "I'm Not a Computer", Dr. Spock's objections to flash cards, etc.

I`ve heard that home schooling was good because it cuts out all art,gym and classes like that. And religious and moral reasons. But where I live it is a growing trend for a mother to pull her kid/kids out of school because their kid/kids are not behaving in school and getting punished by the school if their kid/kids are being bad and unruly on the school bus and are getting suspensions from the bus. There is parents forming together and saying aint no one gonna give my kid detention or suspentions.I hear them say well my kid cussed the teacher but still teacher had no right to raise her voice to my kid.I know this is 2006 but should parents be allowed to home school their kids because they refuse to allow their kids to respect the adult authority? My kids get punished at school then when they get home I punish them.America is only gonna get worst with disrespectful people and hateful people.I guess alot can thank their moms.

I know that it varies from student to student and family to family and day to day. I am looking for specific numbers. Please don't tell me about most homeschoolers, I want to know about you specifically. How much time do you or your student spend with people outside of family?

My husband and I are planning to homeschool our girls (currently 3 and 1) and we've read a lot of material at parents but I'd like to get the perspective of homeschooled students themselves. Please share your experiences! Here are some questions to start off and any other comments are welcome. Thank you!

1) During which ages or grades were you homeschooled?
2) Why did your parents or guardians choose to homeschool you?
3) What type of homeschooling did you do? (particular curriculum, unschooling, etc.)
4) Who was/were your primary teacher(s) (mother, father, both, self)?
5) How did your teachers handle subjects with which they weren't familiar themselves (e.g. foreign languages or advanced math)?
6) Describe a typical school day for you (if you can!), at various ages if possible.
7) Were you homeschooled alone or with siblings or other students?

i'm sick of hearing this argument from "anti-homeschooling" people that home schooled kids don't get a taste of the real world and they are socially retarded, and don't know how to act around a crowd, this is a stupid comment, do you think we lock our kids up in a cave or something, mine spend a max of 4 broken up hours per day on study and the rest they have social commitments. Its blatantly obvious your point about socialization is ridiculous so can anyone bring themselves to be honest once and for all and tell the real reason for not agreeing with homeschooling
