I came up with

I'm I right or can this be really simplified?

I think your question is a little ambiguous.
Do you mean a * sqrt(8) - 3 * sqrt(2a^2)?
Or do the brackets go elsewhere?

If the brackets are right, then:

sqrt(2a^2) is equal to a*sqrt(2)
and
sqrt(8) = sqrt(2 * 2 * 2) = sqrt(2 * 2^2) = 2*sqrt(2)

So now we've got 2a*sqrt(2) - 3a*sqrt(2)
Which can be factored to
sqrt(2) * (2a - 3a)
which becomes
sqrt(2) * (-a)

So I think the answer might be -a*sqrt(2)

I believe the answer is 2a^2 - a. Every other variable cancels out and you can't reduce a^2 - a.
