My son can choose from Spanish, French, German, and Latin. He chose Latin. We live in the Midwest and really don't have a lot of opportunity to use any foreign language, unless a person chooses to pursue that field. However, I took 3 years of Spanish and feel that he could gain so much more from studying a 'real' language, especially Spanish, as that culture is so predominant in today's society. Any opinions?

Now that it is the time of year where hopeful future scholars are having fates decided by the all-but-transparent grad school application process, questions are arising. How is it that one can get a fellowship at a top program, yet be rejected by mid-line programs? What exactly is the logic behind who gets accepted and rejected to a program?

(And please, spare the trite "Sometimes life just works out that way" bit.)

I'm planning to go to art school and i'm just wondering if these schools are paticular about the content of the highschool transcript. I've done a lot in high school, but i've been homeschooled and I am not strong in academics. So I cannot list all the "typical" classes on my transcript. Would this be a problem for trying to get into an art school. Apart from the academic side, i have potential and i am passionate about art and I am not lazy.

I have a paper due tomorrow about the Gettysburg Address. I've never been real good with history or why events happened, so if you can help me understand some basics about the Battle of Gettysburg, or Abe's famous speech, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!

When I was a little kid, I saw a sign that said "please refrain from smoking." Mom explained that meant not to do it.

A month later, I was in choir and we were singing from the printed lyrics. It said "REFRAIN" so I stopped. Choir teacher was irked.

Come on, guys...can't we work this out and have just one meaning for REFRAIN?

Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not soe,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill mee.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

thank you!
