It is one of the most awful books on the planet! Scott O'Dell should burn every copy of it. The only way I managed to stay focused was by promising myself that I would watch Mel Gibson's movie "Payback" when I finished the book.

take a break, look up the word preserverance, and feel good that you are developing good character in addition to fulfilling your obligaiton to suffer through. At the next break, say 30 minutes reflect on the fact that you can read, you have the knowledge, eyesight, intellect, people who care are expecting it to get down and now think of those who have never held a book, wouldn't know one letter from another, never will they imagine life in the Island of Blue Dolphins. Read it, understand it and celebrate it for them.

Sit in your room, turn off anything that could distract you (tv, cell phone, etc.), and reward yourself for reading each chapter (a cookie maybe?). Sometimes when I can't stay focused it helps me to read it out loud.

I loved that book. I guess it depends on what kind of things you like. Take breaks and pace yourself. you will get through it
